About Speak Nigeria
Keeping heritage languages within reach.
Our mission
Speak Nigeria is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 99-2964468) dedicated to helping children learn and keep Nigerian heritage languages. We host community-accessible educational programs and build free, open-access resources that parents, teachers, and schools can use anywhere for the public benefit.
For many families, especially those raising children away from home, a heritage language can quietly slip away in a single generation. We want to change that. A language isn't only a way to speak — it carries family history, culture, and a sense of belonging. When a child holds on to the language, they hold on to all of it.
Where we are now
We're starting with Yoruba, where our courses and resources are already available. Igbo is next — we're in early conversations with teachers to help shape it. Over the longer term, we plan to grow into Hausa, Bini, Ijaw, and Efik too.
Alongside the courses, we're building a free, open-source learning game for Nigerian languages. Because it's open, it can grow in many languages at once — which is where volunteers and speakers make an enormous difference. Words connect children to family, culture, and identity — not just vocabulary, but a place to stand.
Open by default
Our games, videos, and materials are free and open, so any family or classroom can use them.
Joyful learning
Children learn best when it feels like play. We build for curiosity, warmth, and fun.
Who we serve
We build for the whole circle around a child. Parents get simple tools to bring the language into everyday life at home. Teachers and schools get open lesson materials and games they can drop into a classroom. And children get lessons made just for them — clear, playful, and encouraging.
