Summary

  • We use cookies to count how our sites are used and to see whether our ads bring anyone. You can refuse them.
  • We show no advertising on our own pages, we do not sell data, and we do not personalise ads or build profiles.
  • You do not need an account, and we do not ask for your name unless you fill in a form.
  • Our courses are for children, so there are extra limits on what we collect. See Children's privacy.

Information we collect

When you read or play

If you accept cookies, we record which pages you visit, roughly where in the world you are, what kind of device you are using, and what you did on the page - a search on the dictionary, a level finished in a game.

The dictionary runs its searches on your own device. What you type is only sent to us if you have accepted cookies, and then only so we can see which words people want that we do not have.

When you enrol a child or contact us

This is the most personal information we hold, so it is worth being exact. The enrolment form asks for:

  • Your name, email address and phone number
  • Your child's name, or your children's names
  • Each child's age, which we use to place them in a class at the right level and time
  • How many children you are enrolling, and which payment option you have chosen

The information request and volunteer forms ask for less - normally a name, an email address and your question.

All three run on Google Forms, so what you type reaches Google before it reaches us, under Google's privacy policy. We do not take card details on any of our sites.

How we use it

To answer questions about whether our sites work - does anyone follow the building-block links, which words are missing from the dictionary, which parts of a game are hard. To see whether our ads bring anyone here. And, for the forms, to reply to you and run the classes.

Enrolment details are used to place your child in a class, to contact you about it, and to arrange payment. They are seen by the staff and teachers who run the classes, and by nobody else.

We do not use any of it to advertise to you, and we do not sell it. A child's name and age are never used for anything but running the class they are enrolled in.

Cookies and similar technologies

WhoWhat forNeeds your permission
Us Remembering your answer to the cookie notice No - without it we would have to ask you on every page
PostHog Counting visits and recording what happened on a page Yes
Google Seeing whether our ads led anyone to us Yes
Cloudflare Serving the sites and blocking attacks No - it uses no cookies for this

The dictionary also stores a copy of itself on your device so it works without a connection. That copy never leaves your device and is not a cookie. You can clear it as you would any website's data.

Our advertising

We advertise through Google Ad Grants, a programme that gives nonprofits free search advertising. It allows plain text ads on Google search results only. It cannot be used to follow you around the web, to build an audience list, or to show you a personalised ad - and we have turned ad personalisation off in any case. Google requires us to be able to show that our ads bring people here, which is the only reason a Google cookie is on these sites at all.

Who we share it with

The four organisations in the table above, each acting for us under contract, and nobody else. We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not share it for anyone else's advertising.

Legal basis

For visitors in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland: your consent, which you give or refuse on the cookie notice and can change at any time. For the forms, performing the service you asked us for.

Children's privacy

Our courses are for children and teenagers, roughly ages 5 to 17. Our websites are written for the parents and teachers who choose them, but the games are made to be played by the children themselves, so a child may well be the person using one.

That leads to some limits we hold ourselves to:

  • We show no advertising, anywhere. None of our sites carries an ad. We advertise on Google search to bring people here; we do not sell space on our own pages, and nobody pays us to reach you.
  • We never personalise ads or build profiles of any visitor, child or adult, and we do not let anyone else use our data to do so.
  • We do not record sessions. Some analytics tools can replay what a visitor did on screen, like a video. We have that turned off on all three of our sites.
  • The games and the dictionary ask for nothing personal. There is no account, no login and no name. What we keep from a game is how the game went - which words were answered, which tones were mixed up, how long a level took. That tells our teachers what is hard to learn.
  • A child's name and age reach us only from you. We collect them on the enrolment form, which a parent or guardian fills in. We never ask a child for them directly, and nothing on our sites invites a child to type their name.

If you are a parent or a teacher and you would rather we counted nothing at all, choose Reject on the cookie notice, or write to us and we will explain how to keep it off for a whole classroom.

How long we keep it

Usage data is held by PostHog on their free plan, which keeps it for one year and then removes it. We do not keep a separate copy, so a year is the outside limit for anything in this section.

Enrolment forms are kept for as long as we run the classes. We have not been setting a deletion date, because families come back - a child who takes a year off and returns should not have to start again, and we would rather still know their name and level. If you would like your family's details removed, ask us and we will do it.

Payment records are kept for as long as our obligations as a nonprofit require.

International transfers

We are based in the United States and our analytics data is stored there. If you are in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland, that means your data is transferred outside your country; our processors provide the standard contractual clauses that permit this.

Your rights

Choose Reject on the cookie notice and nothing is stored but that choice. If you already accepted and want to undo it, clear this site's data in your browser and the notice will ask you again.

You can also ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be deleted, or object to us holding it, by writing to hello@speaknigeria.org. If you are in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland and you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to your national data protection authority.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or who processes it, we will update this page and change the date at the top. If the change means we need your permission for something new, the cookie notice will ask you again rather than assume your old answer still stands.
